The neighborhood encompassed by the Guilford Lakes Association was originally developed in the the 1930's as a vacation community with horse trails, a golf course and three lakes. While the golf course and surrounding woodlands have been deeded to the town, the lakes, with their private beaches remain the benefit of the neighborhood's residents. In 1963, the Guilford Lakes Improvement Association was incorporated by an act of the state legislature.

Today, the GLIA is charged with maintaining and improving the lakes, beaches and dams, acquiring property and providing for the general welfare of its members and residents.
